Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 01/12/2018

Receipts: 1,267 Last Week: 1,370 Year Ago: 1,964

Compared to last week: Last week saw a very light run of feeder cattle,
thus no accurate market trend can be developed, however steady to higher
undertones were noticed on all calves weighing less than 600 lbs, while
calves over 600 lbs sold with lower undertones. Quality this week was
average to attractive and noticeably better than last weeks sale. Most
calves were in very light flesh, with most weaned for 60 days or more.
Demand for feeder calves was moderate to good for calves suitable to go
to grass, while heavier weight calves sold on mostly light to moderate
demand. Market activity this sale was moderate to active. Weigh up cows
sold on mostly moderate to good demand for light offerings. Packers showed
the strongest demand for cows as they purchased them both to send to feed
as well as for immediate harvest. Most cows were very full this sale, offering
buyers weigh conditions in favor of the seller. Despite this, demand for cows
for immediate harvest was good. The cow cutout remains strong as post-holiday
demand has helped keep the cutout near 170.00. The cow cutout as of todays
close was estimated at 170.40, 0.04 higher than Thursdays close. A heavy
offering of bred stock was seen this sale. Buyers were very active in
purchasing cows both ringside as well as on the internet. One complete
dispersion of Angus cows sold on very good demand. Most of these lots are
tagged as fancy in the report below. Feeder cattle receipts were 58 percent
steers, 42 percent heifers; 64 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Offerings
were 59 percent feeder cattle, 11 percent slaughter cows, 0 percent slaughter
bulls, 6 percent feeding cows and cows returning to the country. The next sale
will be Wednesday January 17th, 2018.
